Preceded by the Celaque National Park (rain forest whose name in lenca means “Box of Water”) and by other areas of Colosuca, our natural landscape is another attractive visiting site.

Let’s be a part of the Thermal Waters and the mountains of Opalaca, Camapara, and El Alta.

National Park Celaque Mountain

From any part in Gracias, this imposing natural landscape can be seen on the top. The center for visitors is only 9km away from downtown Gracias and its access is relatively easy.

Even when the walk is rather pleasant, we recommend you to rent a car in Gracias, that way you won’t be completely tired when you arrive to the center for visitors, since from this point it is necessary to ascend an extra 1,400 to 2,500 meters, where all the flora and fauna typical from a rain forest can be found.

In the Celaque mountain you will find over 230 plant species, 45 species of mammals, and 269 species of birds, several of which are endangered species throughout the world.

By mid XX century, Dr. Leiden discovered the tooth of a mastodon in Lempira, since then paleontology recognizes the importance of this place where preceding species that you well know, have been found: two mastodons, the pony with three fingers, a primitive camel, a giant slug bear, a giant armadillo, and a relative of the present hippopotamus. These came from migrations from North America and Panama.

Eleven rivers in vertical position are born from the Celaque mountain, which can be seen from the mountain, almost like Celaque was a water volcano. Arriving at the top, you can find yourself in the highest spot in Honduras: Cerro Las Minas.

1) GRACIAS

Thermal Waters

6½ km from Gracias, you will be able to find these relaxing, healthy, and indescribable natural thermal water swimming pools.

The big pools, where you can bathe and relax, will always be complete with clean water, since the water arises within itself like a natural fountain.

The sulfur that comes out of these thermal waters, works as natural exfoliation for the skin, it fights spots, stress, and even arthritis.

This place is open seven days a week, in fact the favorite hour for visitors is by night, and even though there are in fact a small group of people, it is a very romantic spot; the mystic of this place is mingled with the moonlight.

Opalaca

This municipality is characterized by the many kilometers of road that can be taken by mounting horses.

Filled with grand landscapes, Opalaca places at your disposal the beauty of its mountains and the fantastic water fall that the mountain offers.

As a tourist attraction, El Alta has an impressive viewpoint to the south of Lempira and the Republic of El Salvador. Species of flora and birds of high altitude like an eagle family, and in December through January, you can see a beautiful bird hall, because these are the ones being born on the mountain and that is when they start flying.

Despite the most relevant data, is that due to its importance, 11 families that used to live at El Alta, with support from the Municipal Corporation, decided to move to give way for tourism. El Alta can be found in San Sebastian, 45 km from Gracias.
